ABOUT THE AUTHOR
This book discusses the New Kingdom wars, estimating how much was needed to supply the units, the speed, distances involved, and the military equipment. It had a lot more detail than I needed at times.
Seemed seemed superficial for the level I was expecting.
Due to the nature of which the ancient Egyptians retold events, discerning the truth of events is always a challenge. In terms of military history, this is especially true. Using what primary sources at his disposal (and borrowing from troop movements of Alexander the Great and the Romans), Spalinger makes a number of solid inferences about the movement, logistics and strategy of the Egyptian military in the New Kingdom. While military history per se is not of much interest to me, Spalinger's reasoning and details are lucid and well-supported, particularly concerning the time he estimates to move, feed and support the Egyptian army under Thutmoses III, IV and Rameses II. Of more interest to me was his discussion of the role of the military in Egyptian society (particularly at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th Dynasties) and the politics behind Egyptian conquests in Nubia and the Levant.
So interesting, I read this from cover to cover, way beyond what was required for class! Well written and documented.
Difficult to read without a pronunciation guide. You rate it Amazon. Decent for the course of Ancient Warfare. I'd recommend it.
