A superb textbook!

Michael Benton's book begins with the question, "Did vertebrates begin as worms or bags?" The book is a detailed study of vertebrate evolution beginning with chordates in the Cambrian Period and ending with humans. His chapter on "How to Study Fossils Vertebrates" is especially interesting, because he explains the various technologies and scientific approaches that are used for studying vertebrate paleontology. Throughout the book, Benton does an excellent job of explaining how the science of paleobiology is done. Overall, this book is up-to-date (2024), contains excellent illustrations, diagrams, phylogenetic charts, and end-of-chapter references. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I will keep it and refer to it in the future.
