This 40th-anniversary edition presents Unfinished Tales as an illustrated deluxe hardcover in a matching illustrated slipcase. Its 528 English-language pages bring together J. R. R. Tolkien’s writings on Middle-earth, edited with commentary by Christopher Tolkien.
The edition features 18 full-colour paintings by Alan Lee, John Howe and Ted Nasmith, a ribbon marker and two removable full-colour posters. The illustrated slipcase and presentation features distinguish this edition from other versions of the same title.
Unfinished Tales explores the people, places and histories behind The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. Its narratives range from the Elder Days to the end of the War of the Ring, adding background to familiar events and opening further paths through Middle-earth.
Among its subjects are Tuor’s encounter with Ulmo, Gandalf’s account of the events leading to the Quest of Erebor, and the organisation of the Riders of Rohan. Other writings examine Númenor, the Five Wizards, the Palantíri and the story of Amroth.
Christopher Tolkien’s editorial commentary places these writings alongside his father’s other works. Together, the narratives and notes offer a closer look at stories and historical details that extend beyond the principal novels.
