About this edition
John Whitenight explores the decorative objects Victorians displayed and preserved beneath glass domes.
Under Glass examines a distinctive part of Victorian decorative culture: the display of objects beneath glass domes. The examples include taxidermy, shells, wax flowers and fruit, hair work and intricate craft materials.
Photographs and commentary connect these objects with the tastes and social context of the period from 1837 to 1901. The book offers collectors and design-history readers a closer look at the imagination and workmanship of these displays.
