ABOUT THE AUTHOR
This is a wonderfully lucid treatment of epigenetics. I'm new to this fascinating and important subject, but the book provided both a level of detail that challenged me and an organizational structure and a writing style that aided my understanding.

Bought this book for an undergraduate course called adaptive psychology. I’m in my 3rd year of my Ph.d program and still looks brand new!
This is a good book if you want to learn more about epigenetics but don't have background in the biological sciences. The author does a good job of explaining the basics in plain language, but with interesting stories as well, keeping what could easily become an over-dry topic, interesting. He also takes a balanced approach throughout, informing the reader when the subject at hand is still hypothesis (unproven) and when it is closer to being a proven theory or principle. It can't be overstated that in general, the idea that our experiences and those of our parents can impact our gene expression, and therefore our phenotype, is still a very young science. Even several years on since this book was first published, much is yet to be studied and confirmed. The estimate put forward in the book is "10 percent". Today, probably not more than 15, to the extent these things can be quantified. Probably the most well-studied areas to date are those that involve diet and the effects of nourishment on the unborn, but even here there is a lot we can only guess at. The ongoing studies of pregnant women and their children — which won't reach their conclusions for many years in some cases — will mark the point at which we begin to understand things better. Having said that, other than college textbooks, there are very few good resources available on this topic, so book this is a great place to start. If you're interested in learning more about the mechanisms in the brain that are potentially affected by epigenetics, Behave by Robert Sapolsky is a challenging but excellent read.
excellent book
It is longer and more detailed that other books on this topic, but provides the clearest accounts of the respective phenomena. The author has managed to explain very well phenomena that are very complicated. It is worth all the reader's time.
