Explore five decades of Sam Gilliam's work in this illustrated hardcover monograph, with texts by Ishmael Reed, Mary Schmidt Campbell and Andria Hickey.
Sam Gilliam's art explores the possibilities of colour, material and form beyond the conventional picture frame. This monograph follows five decades of his work, beginning with the artistic environment of Washington, DC, in the 1960s and tracing his evolving approach to abstraction.
Created in collaboration with the Sam Gilliam Foundation, the book brings together illustrations, archival material and new texts by Ishmael Reed, Mary Schmidt Campbell and Andria Hickey. It considers the artist's experiments and the importance of improvisation, including his connection to jazz.
