Absolutely riveting. I had no idea his work was so widespread..

An absolutely amazing piece of paleo eye candy. It brings those long ago days of our revolution to life.Further, the artistic representation of animal life scenarios is mind blowing. I love this book.Great idea by Milner to bring a leading anthropologist (Tattersall) into the mix.

An unusual remarkable book. It illustrates the past, and gives it immediacy. An incredible teaching tool.

This is the book so many of us have been waiting for! Matternes is a master, a true "artist's artist", one of the very best in the world. His art has thrilled millions yet his name has not been widely known- until now. The unsung is now sung, and it's glorious! He is still with us and the fact that he has lived to see this book is a supreme blessing. Richard Milner has done the almost impossible in assembling this trove, working closely with Matternes himself. Get it, you will never be sorry!

A wonderful, beautifully produced review of an artist I have admired since I first saw his murals in the National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC some 60 years ago. I especially liked the section of his illustrations of human ancestors, including Ardipithecus. I also loved the sketches of gorillas he made for Dian Fossey. I plan to buy copies for my extended family for Christmas.
