Eliot Wigginton is an American educator, writer, and folklorist best known as the founder of the Foxfire project. As a high school teacher in rural Georgia, he inspired his students to document the traditions, skills, and oral histories of Appalachian residents. This work led to the creation of the Foxfire book series, which became a cultural phenomenon. My least avid readers LOVE the FoxFire books

I bought these for my children to read about history in a practical way. I have some that will find ways to read EVERYWHERE, and some who hate reading. The highest praise I can give for these books is this:The one child I have that seems least interested in reading history or philosophy (and is the most practical-minded), I continually find reading these FoxFire books quiertly in a corner - always chapters about how to make shoes, or toys, or soap. They will share information about how things used to be done in the old days and come up with fascinating insight about daily activities. It seems that these scratch the practical itch in ways almost nothing else does.

The Definitive Guide to Appalachian Traditions and Culture

If you are not familiar with Appalachian culture and have never read this wonderful series, it should be your first primary source for an overview of the rich history, culture, and traditions of the Appalachian people.I grew up in poverty in rural Delaware, and we lived in similar circumstances to the people of Appalachia. My mom would repeatedly borrow the Firefox series from the public library. I always dove into them as soon as she was finished reading them. I am now 40, and I had not opened a Foxfire book in 25 years, until these came this weekend. I now live in rural Eastern Kentucky after a jaunt around the world as a military wife, and I decided to revisit the Foxfire series. Reading the first paragraph of the first book almost felt like going home.The Foxfire series is half how-to manual and half cultural text. The how-to information is fantastic! Now, some of it might not be practical for a city dweller, but the rich recipes in the books are worth a try even if you live in an apartment. My mom always made the blackberry cobbler recipe from the first book, and it always turned out great! There are so many things to learn from the Foxfire series, even if it simply gives you a positive view of the people of Appalachia.The Foxfire series definitely deserves a space in your home library!
