Many years ago I made one of the most important decisions of my life. I decided to hire a personal trainer. Back then, I had the desire, but not the plan. I had limited knowledge and lacked the discipline to make the hard choices. Without a trainer to educate me, put together a plan, and most importantly provide the accountability I needed to stick with the plan --- I would have failed. But nearly 20 years later, I feel great and am in the best shape of my life. My quality of life is much better but I couldn’t have gotten there without the trainer – my trusted guide.I think of this book, and the author John Vento, as the trainer for my financial health. He is the trusted guide who educates, helps develop the right plan, and holds me accountable for making the difficult choices along the way that are necessary if I want to achieve my financial goals. If you want to get ahead financially, read this book and pay careful attention to what it says. It is not easy but it works.There are so many books about managing your finances – and most of them promise some type of secret formula that will make you money without effort or risk. It is frustrating to sift through all the garbage to find someone who will just give you the truth in an understandable way, and then help you with a plan to realize your goals. I’m willing to do the work, but I want to know that the work will actually result in me achieving my goal.This book does exactly that. It is refreshingly authentic and honest. It lays out the basics of managing your finances in a way that is easy to understand. It doesn’t pull punches or promise the impossible (Yes, we do have to live within our means). It identifies big opportunities most of us don’t think about (Mortgage is not our biggest expense – taxes are - but we can do something about that). It takes the complex (Estate taxes, Retirement plans) and makes it comprehensible.The author provides a unique perspective on managing finances, because he is both a Certified Financial Planner AND a Certified Public Accountant. Almost every book on finances or wealth management I have read talks about investing but completely ignores the matter of taxes. But this book goes deep on taxes. He calls it tax alpha to the 2nd power. This book lays out real strategies for helping me keep more of what I earn - and that for me makes all the difference.I highly recommend this book. Don’t think of it as a story to read. It is not a one and done. Think of it more like a guidebook. Something to be taken chapter by chapter. Something that will provoke hard questions, but questions we all need to address. Think of it as your guide.
