Just as described a beautiful book

I have to say that "Anna Karenina" is the best book I have ever read. Tolstoy's writing is incomparably brilliant, even in an English translation. This is my fourth reading of the novel, and something new always shines through. His genius leaves me astonished. If you haven't already done so, read this book!!

So many stories happening simultaneously. Easy to follow, however. I think some details could have been shortened. Long book. Glad I read it.Glad it’s over.

Excellent!And just a few unnecessary picky statements that in no way are intended to reduce this beautiful translation.See, we are not reading original Tolstoy (in Russian). So, we need to trust and hope that we are getting the closest version of Tolstoy that we are able to obtain. In this case, Pevear and Volokhonsky, the translating pair is our Tolstoy. And, I think, that for most of us this is as good as it gets.Translations are mix of art and knowledge. The ratio of artistic vs linguistic cannot be scientifically well-defined at the time. Do you want an exact translation where some, maybe many of cultural, societal, local area norms, behaviors, expressions won’t be understood? Or do you want to make an English-written art out of Russian art, skipping over some difficult or morally reprehensible words and their implied meanings, or uncomfortable, untranslatable nuances. Translators tried to balance that for us.And, just when you thought that I said all I had, like Colombo, just one more thing:For Tolstoy and Dostoevsky--their first sentences in their novels are heavy weight, have a special meaning that tends to define the entire novel or dominate the expectations. In the case of this translation (Anna Karenina) I don’t see the reason to play economical with the sentence and make it shorter. The original first sentence has the words “one another” or “each other,” in original: "друг на друга”, and unless you think that Tolstoy was blabby fellow, there is no good reason to skip it. I think that by honoring the first translation by Dole, we can approach Tolstoy’s real sense of a fine(r) gradation between being alike and resembling of somebody or something.“All happy families resemble one another, every unhappy family is unhappy after its own fashion,” the first translation of Anna Karenina by Nathan Dole.
