ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The usual, but always fun, adventures in the Dordogne that brings every character and place to life, including the food and cooking.
I just love the Bruno books. Learn history, enjoy France, especially the Vezere region, all wrapped up in an intriguing story.
I've read the entire series but they have become less and less entertaining and I'm afraid this last one is just boring. Endless history and food with over little mystery. I only bought it because it was reduced but I won't be buying another.
A big jump ahead for me in the series, after a break of a few years. Walker's prose began rolling smoothly as I started this book, fitting like an old t-shirt. With perhaps five intervening episodes to return to, this still read well as an almost standalone. And having visited last year the towns used as the setting for the series, I have a better image of the countryside.I loved the narrative, but admit a disappointment with the almost abrupt conclusion, leaving too much to speculation.
The mystery wasn't terribly dramatic, but the introduction of a couple of potentially interesting St. Denis newcomers and the suspense of a flood threatening the village made this a good read. Is it ever cold enough in St. Denis for a snowstorm? If so, that could add some future drama.I am more than ready for Bruno to settle down and get married to a woman who prioritizes a husband, home and family. It would be pleasurable to read of Bruno enjoying marital bliss and welcoming children, in addition to perhaps renovating his home and garden in order to provide for a growing family. This should in no way prevent him from solving crimes or preparing outstanding meals for his friends.
